In 2023, Coalition Event Services partnered with Staffordshire County Council to launch a groundbreaking sustainable roadshow across the Borough of Staffordshire. Central to this initiative was a 10-metre Carbon Bubble, a powerful visual that depicted what one tonne of carbon dioxide looks like. This striking installation successfully raised awareness about carbon emissions and their environmental impact.
Fast forward to 2024, and we are thrilled to announce our continued collaboration with Staffordshire County Council. This year’s project, the Climate Sustainable Dreamhouse, is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. The Dreamhouse concept originated from the Staffordshire Council marketing and campaigns team, Rose and Lily. They envisioned an idea which was then brought to life through collaboration with Coalition Event Services. Coalition handled the production and delivery, transforming the initial concept into a tangible reality. Carefully planned and constructed from sustainable and recyclable materials, the Dreamhouse is a pop-up installation designed for one-day to long term events, providing an engaging and interactive experience for visitors.
Welcome to the Climate Sustainable Dreamhouse!
The Dreamhouse features five distinct areas:
• The Kitchen
• The Living Room
• The Bedroom
• The Bathroom
• The Garden & Outside Areas
Embracing Sustainability in Event Production
In event production, familiarity with trusted suppliers and materials often brings reliability. However, for the Climate Sustainable Dreamhouse, we adopted a new approach, integrating sustainability into every facet of the project. Here are some of the sustainable elements of the Dreamhouse:
beMatrix Framing
beMatrix, known as “the most sustainable product on the market,” is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2026. Their framing solutions, delivered by Symbiosis UK, provided the structural foundation of the Dreamhouse.
Graphics
We used Foamalux Xtra, a resilient PVC sheet with a black core made of up to 80% reclaimed content. This 100% recyclable material, manufactured from reclaimed foam PVC, significantly reduces landfill waste.
Furniture
Furniture for the Dreamhouse was sourced from second-hand marketplaces and restored. Highlights include an oak kitchen table and chairs, ‘Eco furn’ tables and chairs, and pre-loved glass jars for food storage. When new items were necessary, we opted for sustainable products like bamboo and 100% recycled materials. Visitors especially loved the recycled and repurposed hangers made from old wooden clothing hangers.
Garden
Guests enter through upcycled fencing, locally sourced, fixed and refurbished. Handmade planters, crafted from FSC-certified wood, add a personal touch adorned with the Staffordshire Knot symbol. A garden wall, made from a broken garden table found in our Production Directors garden and destined for the skip, demonstrates the potential of repurposing materials. Additional features include a hedgehog hotel, bird boxes, and a bug hotel – all handmade from wood offcuts. Herb gardens and bee homes, kindly donated by the Friends of Victoria Park, adorn the area. An upcycled garden bedding trolley teaches visitors the importance of planting seedlings, which they can take home in biodegradable cardboard tubes. Demonstration electric vehicle charging points and bike parking emphasise the benefits of active travel schemes in Staffordshire.
Flooring
We used repurposed Rola Trac, a reusable and 100% recyclable flooring solution by MacroTrac. The vinyl floor coverings, made from recycled materials, are also 100% recyclable after use.
Engaging Visitors with Sustainable Practices
We believe it is crucial for visitors to have multiple touchpoints to comfortably absorb the key messaging. Throughout the Dreamhouse, visitors are provided with information on sustainable living. This information is delivered through text bubbles on graphics, QR code links, takeaway eco-leaflets, educational eco-games and touch-button recordings. Even the recordings were eco-friendly, utilising Ai cloned voices from Coalition and Council staff. The project also benefited greatly from the involvement of numerous volunteers, each an expert in their own area of sustainability. These volunteers readily engage with visitors, sharing their knowledge and offering valuable advice.
The Dreamhouse also features its very own power source – a solar panel installation. This powers the equipment and demonstrates the renewable and infinite energy potential of solar power. Additionally, the logistics of transporting the Dreamhouse across the borough are supported by a Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) powered vehicle, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90%.
